Working alone and the Work Environment Act: Safety through personal alarms
The Work Environment Act is a central part of labor law in Sweden and aims to ensure a safe and secure work environment for all employees. An important aspect of the law is the requirements placed on employers to protect employees who work alone, which means that a person works without proximity to other people. These work situations involve special risks, and the law sets specific requirements to minimize these risks. An effective way to meet these requirements is through the use of personal alarms as part of the personal protective equipment.

What does the Work Environment Act say about solo work?
According to the Working Environment Act (AML), the employer has the ultimate responsibility for ensuring that the working environment is safe and that risks of injuries and accidents are minimized. For lone work, this means that the employer must take measures to protect the employee against potential dangers, which is described in more detail in the Swedish Work Environment Agency’s regulations (AFS 1982:3) on lone work.

The regulations emphasize that risk assessment is a central part of the employer’s responsibility. Before an employee is allowed to work alone, the employer must have carried out a thorough risk assessment to identify and minimize potential hazards. It can be anything from physical injuries to threatening or violent situations. Based on this risk assessment, the employer must ensure that the right safety measures are in place, which may include technical equipment such as personal alarms.

Personal alarm as a solution for working alone
Personal alarms are an important tool that can help employers meet the requirements set by the Work Environment Act when it comes to protecting employees who work alone. A personal alarm enables the employee to quickly and easily call for help in an emergency, which reduces the risk of a dangerous situation developing into something more serious.

Modern personal alarms are often equipped with GPS and can be connected to an alarm center or other monitoring function. In the event of an accident, threat or other emergency, the employee can activate the alarm, which gives the employer and/or an alarm center the opportunity to immediately locate the person and send help.

Examples of situations where personal alarms are crucial
There are many occupational groups where solitary work is common and where personal alarms can be crucial to ensure safety. These include security guards, parking attendants, service staff, nursing staff and craftsmen who carry out work in remote or isolated locations. There is also lone work in industry and the construction industry, where the risks can be particularly high due to the dangerous work environments that often prevail.

Personal alarms can be particularly important in situations where the worker cannot be expected to have access to help from other people nearby. In the event of sudden accidents, for example if a worker falls or becomes unconscious, modern personal alarms can be triggered automatically, for example by sensing the lack of movement, which immediately alerts the employer or an alarm center.

How do personal alarms meet the legal requirements?
In order to comply with the Work Environment Act and the regulations on lone work, employers must implement measures that effectively reduce the risks to employees who work alone. Personal alarms are one of the most practical and reliable tools for this purpose.

With personal alarms, the employer can offer a direct and quick connection to help, something that can save lives in emergency situations. The personal alarms can also be adapted to different work environments and risk levels, making them a flexible solution to meet the requirements of the law. The Swedish Work Environment Authority’s recommendations emphasize the importance of being able to intervene quickly in an emergency, and with personal alarms the employer can meet this requirement by ensuring that help can be reached immediately.

Summary
The Work Environment Act makes clear demands on employers to protect their employees, especially when it comes to risky solo work. Personal alarms are a powerful tool that can help meet these requirements by enabling immediate communication and assistance in an emergency. By integrating personal alarms into safety procedures, employers can ensure that they meet the requirements of the law and, most importantly, create a safer work environment for their employees.

Personal alarms from Amigo Systems can play an important role in offering tailored solutions that meet these needs and requirements, regardless of the type of work environment.
